Dating. It’s awkward, exhausting, and scary. And if you’re already feeling lonely and isolated, it’s easy to sit back and wonder: Where is the love, y’all? Like some marriages, collaborations and nonprofit mergers are most successful when they grow from authentic, long-term relationships. What does that mean for nonprofit leaders? It means, the organization you should merge with is likely the one you’re already collaborating with. In the same way that you’re more likely to meet someone if you have a rich and varied social life, your nonprofit is more likely to find organizations you can partner with if you’re already engaged in your community and testing the waters of collaboration in small ways. Collaboration builds resiliency. I know I’m better because my family, my friends, and my darling wife keep me grounded, accountable, and supported. We need each other, y’all. The more connective threads your organization has, the more likely you’ll buoy one another in times of distress. I know partnership and collaboration are inconvenient but the alternatives - isolation and vulnerability - are far worse. So don’t wait on Cupid’s arrow to help you find your match. Declare your intentions. Take your collaboration to the next level. You might be nervous about how your fellow CEO will react but you can choose courage over comfort. Trust that those butterflies are not a sign of weakness but the energy you need to take that leap. We got you! We even wrote the e-mail for you. So, what are you waiting for?
