#MergerMondays: Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund + Home Base
In April 2024, Home Base and the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund (MMHF) came together in a meaningful merger, forming MMHF at Home Base. Built on years of collaboration, this union was a natural step forward—strengthening the infrastructure behind their care and allowing families to access deeper, more coordinated services through a single, comprehensive program.
Prior to the merger, MMHF focused on providing emergency financial aid, memorial tributes, and community events honoring Massachusetts military families who had lost a loved one in service. Home Base specialized in clinical care—offering mental health treatment, trauma recovery, and wellness support to veterans, service members, and their families. While their missions often intersected, each organization brought a unique and vital strength to the partnership.
Since the merger, families navigating the unimaginable loss of a loved one in service have gained broader access to care. From emergency financial assistance to therapy and grief counseling, MMHF at Home Base now provides a year-round holistic network of support. What once were parallel services have become a more cohesive circle of care—responsive, personal, and grounded in dignity.
The human impact is evident. In a 2024 interview, Nazeraeh Montrond shared how the program stepped in after she lost her father, Sgt. Alberto Montrond, in Afghanistan and later, her mother. MMHF at Home Base helped with therapy, financial planning, and camp programs for her younger siblings—support that helped keep the family afloat. Nazeraeh is now pursuing her doctorate to support other military families.
This past year, the merger also made it possible to expand services, thanks in part to $5 million in federal funding awarded in early 2023 to strengthen clinical programs at Home Base. And each May, the 37,000-flag Memorial Day Garden on Boston Common—organized by MMHF at Home Base—continues to serve as a living tribute to those lost in service and the families who carry their memory forward.
By merging, these two organizations have created something stronger than the sum of their parts: a living tribute to service, sacrifice, and the power of compassion.
