#MergerMondays: Animal Services

Many nonprofits, especially those working with animals, are rooted in the same instinct: care that extends beyond ourselves. Whether through sheltering vulnerable pets or partnering with animals to support human healing, these organizations share a belief that compassion grows stronger when it’s shared. The following mergers show how animal-centered nonprofits are choosing collaboration to expand their reach and deepen their impact.

In Florida, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and the Humane Society of Pinellas have announced a merger that will formally take effect on January 2, 2026. Together, they will operate as The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, with Hillsborough and Pinellas campuses serving the broader Tampa Bay region. Both organizations bring decades of experience in animal sheltering, adoption, and community-based programs. By unifying operations, leadership, and resources, the merged organization aims to strengthen lifesaving services, expand access to affordable veterinary care, and scale programs such as Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) and humane education. Leaders from both organizations emphasized that this move allows donor dollars to go further while improving outcomes for animals and the people who love them.

In Nevada, two equine-focused nonprofits, LEAD with Horses and the Center for Adaptive Riding, have merged to create the state’s only full-service equine-assisted services organization. Founded in 2015, LEAD with Horses provides equine-assisted counseling and learning for youth, veterans, first responders, and families. The Center for Adaptive Riding has a long history of offering therapeutic horseback riding for individuals with physical, emotional, and developmental disabilities. Through this merger, the combined organization can offer counseling, adaptive riding, and equine-assisted learning under one roof, expanding access to services and meeting growing community demand.

Together, these stories reflect a hopeful reality in the nonprofit sector. Mergers, when mission-aligned and community-centered, are not endings; they are commitments to sustainability, stewardship, and shared purpose. In choosing partnership over isolation, these organizations demonstrate how collaboration can strengthen both impact and trust, offering a future where care reaches farther and lasts longer.
