#MergerMondays: Health-Related Mergers
This week we spotlight two nonprofit health mergers—one strengthening the backbone of the blood supply in Southern California and beyond, and another uniting decades of expertise in ocular donation, transplantation, and vision innovation on a global scale. By joining forces, these nonprofits are combining legacy and reach to support patients, research, and the very infrastructure of care in tangible and measurable ways.
In San Diego, California, the San Diego Blood Bank and Vitalant, both nonprofit blood services organizations, have announced a strategic merger expected to close in mid-2026. San Diego Blood Bank has served Southern California for more than 75 years, building trusted regional relationships with donors, hospitals, and volunteers. The merger will make San Diego Blood Bank a subsidiary of Vitalant, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit blood and biotherapies organizations, with more than 115 donation centers and services reaching approximately 900 hospitals nationwide. Leaders from both organizations say the union will expand access to integrated support, advanced clinical capabilities, and stable blood supply resiliency for patients and partner hospitals across the region.
In the world of vision care, Advancing Sight Network and Miracles In Sight, two respected nonprofit eye banks with more than 125 years of combined service, have completed their merger to form Precision Ocular Network. The consolidated organization builds on deep expertise in corneal tissue recovery, research, and surgeon support to restore sight and foster innovation. Individually, these nonprofits have shipped eye tissue globally, trained clinicians, and advanced research that spans from biobank access to emerging treatments. Precision Ocular Network aims to grow capabilities in cellular therapeutics, research, and clinical trials, offering a broader platform for eye health and sight restoration around the world.
These mergers illustrate how nonprofit health organizations are responding creatively to the increasing complexity of care delivery, research, and community demand. By pooling resources and expertise, they are positioning themselves to meet the future with greater scale and sustainability.
